Faroe Islands hosts Nordic Learn to Swim Conference

On October 18 to 20 Faroe Islands Aquatics will host the Nordic Learn to Swim Conference in the capital of Tórshavn. This initiative aims to engage with swim instructors and teachers locally and abroad who want to update their knowledge on how to teach swimming effectively.

This conference takes place every other year, on rotation between the Nordic countries. The last time it was held in the Faroe Islands was in 2012, when 170+ participants spent three rewarding days in these same surroundings.

This year, we hope to have as many attendees, to rebuild our network now after the COVID-19 cancellations of the conferences in 2020 and 2022.

The topics are very relevant, with Nordic experts presenting how swimming skills can be viewed as more than just the ability to swim a certain distance, as well as the common principles of effective swim teaching, and the differences when applying skills from the pool to, for instance, the sea.

Representatives from European Aquatics will present its Learn to Swim Framework, as its best practice guideline for teaching the skills that are swimming. And there will be a friendly debate with these representatives, as the Nordic countries already have their own standard of swimming ability.

On Saturday evening, a gala dinner will take place at the harbor, and generally the plan is to facilitate networking among these many passionate individuals, to hopefully strengthen the teaching of swimming as a whole. All research indicates that there is a pressing need to improve general swimming abilities, especially now in the aftermath of COVID-19.

Interested parties can read more about this conference at ssf.fo/learn2swim, where there is also a link for ticket bookings. The schedule is not yet fully finalized, but there will be activities in the pool also, as well as shorter events at the Nordic House that are still being agreed upon.

See you in Tórshavn,
